Steve Waugh

Steve Waugh is among the top cricketing legends from Australia who was known for his ability to remain calm and cool in high-pressure situations all through his career. He was the captain of the Australian Cricket Team from 1999 to 2004 and was instrumental in wining the World Cup in 1987. In 2004 Steve Waugh was named Australian of the Year for his cricketing excellence. He made his first-class debut in 1984–85 for New South Wales after which in 1985-86 Waugh debuted in Test cricket against India in the second Test at Melbourne. He made his One Day International cricket debut in January 1986 against New Zealand.

Steve Waugh has played in 325 ODI matches having scored a total of 7569 runs which includes 3 centuries and 45 half centuries. His Test career statistics include 168 matches where he scored 10927 runs which includes 32 centuries and 50 half centuries. Waugh was a natural stroke player early in his international career and liked to drive off the back foot.
The turning point of Steve Waugh’s career came during the 1987 World Cup held on the Indian subcontinent where he was instrumental in taking his nation to winning the World Cup.

Though he was a quick scorer in ODIs he was inconsistent at Test level matches. As a captain Steve Waugh had 57 matches which is the fourth highest and 41 victories is the highest of any Test captain. The several honors earned by Waugh include the Australian Sports Medal on 14 July 2000, appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO), and is also an Australian Living Treasure. After retiring from cricket Steve Waugh was has been actively involved with a number of charitable organizations.
