Origin of Cricket

As every game has its major source linked in the past, the logic goes same with Cricket. This 2nd most popular sport in the world after football has a history of good 400 and more years, when most of the common modern games were in the womb. Although there was not much evidence to form a coherent idea about the Origin of Cricket, it has been assumed that England was the one who gave birth to this gentle game. The history of Cricket can be traced back to the second half of the 16th century during Saxon or Norman times, when the children living in the Weald area in south-east England started playing with their wooden weapons and spherical balls.

After the game remained confined within the periphery of the children in that part of the country, it was soon taken up seriously by the adults around the beginning of the 17th century. Although much of the past about Cricket is shrouded, yet it is quite clear that Cricket as a professional game developed in England. Some different opinions exist regarding the Origin of Cricket, as some believes that it originated from ancient bat-and-ball games played in the Indian subcontinent, which were later transported to Europe via Persia. Cricketing History argues that the name of “cricket” originated from the old French word criquet meant a kind of club.

The game of cricket has certain resemblance with the ancient games like Stoolball which is still played in southern counties of England. The first reference to it being played as an adult sport was in 1611. Since then the sport got a gradual development with its fame spreading to other countries. Origin of Cricket owes a lot to the parish matches contested between the natives of the parishes. If you go deep into the Cricket Origin, you will discover that much of the popularity of this game came in the early 17th Century and continued throughout the English Civil War. Later, it started to be recognized as a popular sport.
