Australia is credited with innovating new ideas and developments in the game of cricket which has made the game more interesting. One such innovation in the History of Cricket is the World Series Cricket. As the name suggests, this tournament invited all the cricket playing nations to take part. World Series Cricket (WSC) was the attempt to bring all the famous cricketers in one single tournament, which was initiated by the famous T.V. Channel owner Kerry Packer. This professional cricket competition was staged between 1977 and 1979

The World Series Cricket seemed not to conform to the contemporary rules of international cricket. The tournament was held for three consecutive years and it helped in the promotion of many reputed players of the world. The Cricket lovers believed that World Series Cricket drastically changed the nature of cricket, whose influence is felt even today.

The World Series Cricket originated due to the commonly accepted notion that players were not well paid, and thus they had to accept other ways of earning in bulk. Another probable reason for the springing up of such a competition was because Packer wished to secure the exclusive broadcasting rights to Australian cricket, which was held by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). The World Series Cricket did enough to take the game into a glamorous one as Packer made agreements with leading players of the world like, Tony Greig, Clive Lloyd, Greg Chappell, Ian Chappell for the purpose of personality-based marketing. Some of the best known players like, Dennis Lillee, Imran Khan, Michael Holding and Andy Roberts played in this World Series Cricket which made the media world make much hype about Cricket. The players performed to their best expected level and gave immense entertainment to the crowd.
