India vs. Sri Lanka Second ODI - Preview

August 20, 2008 By: Rohini Verma Category: Reviews and Previews No Comments →

Dambulla: After the miserable defeat in first ODI against Sri Lanka, India is meeting again the confident rivals in the second ODI today. Heart of all the Indian fans are beating faster as the time of match is coming closer. Today will be a tough day for Indian team as the team needs to recover from the last jolt. Badly embarrassed after the last defeat, India needs to effect a swift overhaul in the second ODI here. Today India will have to register a win against the strong rivals to win the ongoing five-match series. If India wins today’s match then they will surely gain a psychological boost badly needed at this moment.

Monday’s eight-wicket defeat came largely because of the disciplined bowling of Lankan bowlers and absence of Sehwag. So today too India will find both the factors in place and whole team will have to come forward to face these factors. Today too the conditions are unlikely to change. Now it remains to be seen how the team India performs in front of these mounting challenges.

Sehwag’s absence is going to be a crucial reason to worry for the Indian side. Much pressure will be there on all the batsmen as in the last match the batsmen were held responsible for the poor show of the Indian team. The top order and the middle order of the team will have a lot of burden on their shoulders. In the last match the lower order performed well and today too the same will be expected from the top and lower order.

The efficient opener Gautam Gambhir failed to shine in the last game so today there will be a chance for the player to prove that he can perform even in the absence of Sehwag. But for this, he will have to leave aside the pressure and reluctance witnessed in his batting in last match. The combine of Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis can be attacked with good strategy and determination so the Indian batsmen have good chance today to blow up the bowling attack of Lanka.

So far the Lankan bowling side has proved as the major deterrent for Indian batsmen. In last match Mendis’s first six overs, of which three were maidens, went for just 10. So far the Indian batsmen have failed to understand the bowling actions of Mendis, today too they may face the same difficulty again. But one thing is sure that to win the match Indians surely need to come up with an efficient strategy against this attacking bowler. The fast pace of his bowling always leaves little time for decisions and Indian batsmen need to take the right decisions on pitch in this little time.

When asked about the strategy for today’s match, Dhoni said, “We have to find a way by which we can rotate the strike, if we can’t play big shots, Perhaps take singles off him and Murali, and look to attack the others because you have got to have something on the board. You can’t score 180 or 200 and look to defend that.”

In this match who so ever bats first, will have to give the target between 225 and 250 only then there will be an interesting battle on the ground. Change in the composition in Indian team may help the team to reach that target. So with Sehwag’s departure, Dhoni might reason that the batting could do with the security of another batsman instead of the fifth bowler. S. Badrinath, one of the 10 who attended Tuesday’s optional nets under coach Gary Kirsten, will be in the reckoning in that case.

The spot of Gambhir’s opening partner is a reason of concern as choosing the right partner for Gambhir will be a difficult thing to do. If a good opening is there without losing the wickets then India may be successful in beating the Lankans in second match. On the Lankan side the team especially the bowlers will like to keep maintaining the pressure they have built so far.

The attacking bowling side will again try to go for maidens and disciplined bowling effort. Getting the early wickets again may prove beneficial for the hosts so their biggest effort will be to grab the early wickets. Even if India plays first and gives a challenging target to Lanka, the efficient and versatile batsmen like Jayawardene and Sangakkara will not mind opening their bats to big hits. Overall the position of Lankan team is far stronger than the visitors, rest it remains to be seen how the Indian team recovers from last spine breaking defeat.

An emphatic win for Sri Lanka - First ODI India vs. Sri Lanka - Review

August 19, 2008 By: Rohini Verma Category: Reviews and Previews No Comments →

Dambulla: The worst nightmare for any Indian cricket fan came true in the first ODI between Sri Lanka and India! All the Indian batsmen were nothing more than lame ducks sitting in front of the blazing bowling of Sri Lanka. It was sheer discipline and control that helped Sri Lanka’s bowlers in bringing the Indian batsmen to thier knees!

Rangiri Dambulla Stadium became witness to the lowest score made by any Indian side in Lanka. In a disgraceful display India was bowled out for 146, its lowest score in Sri Lanka. Ajantha Mendis and Muttiah Muralitharan proved very successful in keeping Indian side under sustained pressure.

On the batting front as well Lankan side performed well. Jayawardene’s unbeaten 61 in 82 balls proved crucial in the victory for his side. This score included 7 magnificent fours. He was successful in building partnership of 102 with Chamara Kapugedera. Kapugedera went 45 not out. Both these performances with bat, helped Sri Lanka complete an eight-wicket win. Over all the Lankan side came up with an excellent all-round batting and bowling performances.

Earlier in the day after winning the toss India came to bat first. But shed three early wickets to Sri Lanka’s opening bowlers. This loss debilitated the strong ground needed to beat Lanka on their home ground. In the Indian batting order much responsibility was on shoulders of Gautam Gambhir especially after an ankle injury forced Virender Sehwag out.

But this otherwise very successful opener lasted just two deliveries. He was sent back by Vaas at duck. Soon V. Kohli was lbw at a ball by Kulasekara at 12 runs. The young Lankan player Kulasekara struck a double blow by removing debutant Virat Kohli and No. 3 Suresh Raina.

S. Raina’s catch was taken by Silva off Kulasekara at 17. The young and energetic Yuvraj was successful in making 23 runs before he was sent back by Mendis. Earlier he was dropped at second slip on 5 but this time there was no escape. Later Rohit’s catch was taken by Jayawardene off Thushara at just 19 runs. These dismissals proved fatal for India. Very soon India had lost its top five for 75 within the 21st over.

Much was expected from captain Dhoni at this moment but he too failed miserably. Dhoni tried to cut Mendis, but it went no further than slip and Dhoni’s catch was taken by Jayawardene at mere 6. The dismissals were not going to stop here, soon Irafan was lbw off Muralitharan at 7. Harbhajan made 12 before being out by Muralitharan at 12.

Zaheer followed him after making 12 runs off Muralitharan again. P. Ojha was not out 16 and Munaf made 15 runs. This way the miserable target of 147 was set for the Lankans. The whole performance of Indian team proved that the team was under great pressure and could not come out of this trap.

For the next games the Indian team will have to come up with new and effecient game plan and strategy. The only good thing for Indian side was the performance of lower order. It was left to the lower-order to bring the total some respectability and that they did admirably. They took the Indian total from 87 for seven to 146. Ojha and Munaf added 29 for the last wicket which was the second-best partnership of the innings. Munaf also struck a monster hit for six off Muralitharan that was worth a few smiles on an otherwise bad day.

When it came to batting the Lankan side did not have an uphill task to perform. Mahela Jayawardene cracked a responsible half-century to take his side to a crushing eight-wicket victory over India. This was his 47th half-century. So the modest 147-run target never appeared difficult. The man-of-the-match was an obvious choice - Ajantha Mendis. He along with Muttiah Muralitharan exposed India’s batting limitations against spin.

Sri Lanka lost opener Sanath Jayasuriya (10) and Kumar Sangakkara (19) in seamer Munaf Patel’s opening spell, but Jayawardene and Chamara Kapugedera (45 not out) ensured the win with a 102-run stand for the third wicket. This way Lanka got an emphatic win and registered a lead in the 5 match series.

India vs. Sri Lanka - First ODI Preview

August 18, 2008 By: Rohini Verma Category: Reviews and Previews No Comments →

DAMBULLA, Sri Lanka, - After losing the crucial test series against Sri Lanka, India has a chance of making a come back in the ODI series. The first ODI starting today, will bring alot of pressure on the Indian shoulders. According to the cricket experts, winning the toss and batting first will be an advantage for the teams on this pitch.

Greatest concern for India is that it lost in-form opener Virender Sehwag due to an ankle injury and his place has been taken by Virat Kohli, who was the under-19 captain. On the other hand Lankan team does not have any such concern. Sri Lanka has named the same playing eleven that won the Asia Cup last month, playing six specialist batsmen and five bowlers.

The shape of the Monday’s ODI, the first in the five-match series, might turn out to be different from what is indicated till now. There is a difference of opinion among the cricket experts on the contest. According to the local journalists and cricketers, run-making would be difficult because the ball would not come on. Many others believe that it is likely that the strip will offer bounce, promoting stroke-play, quick bowling, and spin. All the real action will be unveiled when both the teams meet today.

The pitch is going to be good for both fast bowlers and spinners. So much will depend on their effort. The team which gets some early wickets will surely be able to put extra pressure on the rival team. When it comes to selection of players Dhoni said, “We’ll look to play with five bowlers”. “Who those five bowlers are, we haven’t decided yet. We are looking at two spinners (Harbhajan Singh and Pragyan Ojha); you rarely play four fast bowlers in this situation.”

So there are chances that Irfan Pathan may play today. Zaheer Khan may lead the attack and may be more beneficial for India. He bowls well against strong players like Kumar Sangakkara who is likely to open the batting with Sanath Jayasuriya. If Zaheer captures his wicket early then it will be an advantage for India. Such early wickets are badly needed to take a lead in the series.

On Lankan side the aggressive batsmen like Jayasuriya and Sanggakara will try their best to wound the Indian bowling effort. Jayasuriya has proved his capability to blow the bowling attacks in past as well. So India will have to come up with an effecient strategy to contain such batsmen.

Much depends on the Sri Lankan bowling unit that seems to hold the key to the series. The killing combination of Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis from both ends has already stung the Indian team in test series. The opening pair of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir has performed well in test series but the ankle injury Sehwag suffered on Sunday appears serious threat for India. The middle-order of Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, Rohit Sharma and Dhoni will have to come up with strong defence against Lankan bowlers.

Gambhir will have to perform well because he is the only Indian batsman who consistently read Mendis. If he makes a good initial score then tide will turn in favour of India. Rest all remains to be seen when the two Asian cricket giants meet!

Final Test Match - India vs. Sri Lanka Preview

August 08, 2008 By: Rohini Verma Category: Reviews and Previews No Comments →

After winning the second test match against Sri Lanka, India is entering the final test with a lot of confidence. In this match as well the Indian side will look for a clean getaway. But the challenge in front of Indian team can not be underestimated as very few sides have defeated Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka. On the team strategy and confidence level Indian captain Kumble told the reporters - “In terms of confidence, in terms of strategy, we have done whatever we can to ensure we win the Test and the series.”

India has gone long without stringing two Test wins together, last achieving this in 2005, when it defeated Sri Lanka at Delhi and Ahmedabad. The P. Saravanamuttu Stadium, the venue of this test match has a great cricket legacy. Sir Donald Bradman and the Invincibles played here in 1948. Mahela Jayawardene, the Sri Lankan captain scored a century in the fourth-innings pursuit of 352 against South Africa in 2006. So in this test as well the aggressive Lankan batsmen will try to gather maximum scores.

Both the teams are expected to come without many changes. Both the sides will make a change each. On Indian front Parthiv Patel will replace Dinesh Karthik behind the stumps. On the Lankan side either Thilan Thushara, the left-armer, or Dammika Prasad will play in Nuwan Kulasekara’s place.

As far as the pitch is concerned, India’s bowling side appears better stocked than the hosts. Harbhajan Singh, who at Galle claimed his first ten-for outside India, will surely try to get the leverage from this surface. Kumble has so far not come up with his best so this test will be a good chance to strike the Lankans.

Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma are also there to defend Indian side. Both of them are expected to get better results on this pitch. On the batting side Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir are going to be the best bets. Both the batsmen showed at Galle that they have the stamina to tame Muttiah Muralitharan and Mendis.

The biggest cause of concern is the the famed Indian middle-order. The middle order has failed miserably in last two tests. They have given only one half-century by V.V.S. Laxman in this series. So if by any chance the Indians lose some early wickets then much will again depend on the middle order.

This test match is coming the way of few greats of Indian cricket, so today they do have the chance to prove that they are not the old vulnerable lions rather they can still roar on the ground! On Lankan side the whole team will come more aggressively after their last loss in second test match. The team has some of the best batsmen and trickiest of bowlers of world. There is a lot of pressure on both the sides, so the team which is able to maintain its cool, is bound to win.

The loss of coach Gary Kirsten - who has returned to South Africa to be with his ill mother – may have an impact on the Indian camp but there is certainly enough knowledge and experience in the team that coach’s absence should not affect the team.

The sides:
Sri Lanka: Mahela Jayawardene (capt), Michael Vandort, Malinda Warnapura, Kumar Sangakkara, Thilan Samaraweera, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Prasanna Jayawardene (wk), Chaminda Vaas, Muttiah Muralitharan, Ajantha Mendis, Thilan Thushara, Dammika Prasad, Chamara Kapugedera, Chamara Silva, and Nuwan Kulasekara.

India: Anil Kumble (capt), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, V.V.S. Laxman, Parthiv Patel (wk), Harbhajan Singh, Ishant Sharma, Zaheer Khan, Rohit Sharma, R.P. Singh, Munaf Patel, Pragyan Ojha, and Dinesh Karthik.

Umpires: Rudi Koertzen and Mark Benson; Television umpire: Billy Doctrove; Match referee: Alan Hurst.

Hours of play (IST): 10.15 a.m. to 12.15 p.m., 12.55 p.m. to 2.55 p.m., and 3.15 p.m. till close.

Performance of the Indian Team in ongoing Test Series - A Close Look

August 05, 2008 By: Rohini Verma Category: Reviews and Previews No Comments →

As the spirits are heightened again in the ongoing India- Sri Lanka test series, here is the time to have a close look at the leading players’ performances. After leveling the test series, Indian team looks in high spirits. Indian fans are waiting for Sachin to break the record of Lara. This series is the chance for the master blaster to score his 40th Test century.

After the miserable defeat in the first test, Indian team handed the hosts a crushing defeat. With this win the expectations on Sachin have also increased. So far Sachin has not been able to come up with a good performance. After these two tests, Tendulkar still remains 96 runs adrift of Brian Lara’s record to become the highest run scorer in Test cricket. Lara’s record is 11,953 runs while Tendulkar before the series started had 11,782 at 55.31. He now has 11,857 runs. After losing the chance to break the record in first two tests, the third test comes as a golden chance to Sachin.

So far in this tour Sachin’s bat has failed to produce some good figures. The four innings have yielded 75 runs at average of 21.25, with a top score of 31 on day three of this Galle Test, won by India on Sunday. This performance has surely disappointed the cricket fans especially when you consider how the boast was made that he would scale peaks of success in the first game of the series.

Interestingly, it was against Sri Lanka at Ferozshah Khotla in New Delhi during India’s last Test series against Sri Lanka that Sachin finally edged ahead of Sunil Gavaskar’s record of 34 Test centuries. So the same rivals are here to give chance to Sachin to break another record! The whole world will watch the action on Saravanamuttu Oval in Colombo where the third Test starts on Friday. All the best Sachin!

On the other hand there is some good news for the other Indian players. After their great performances in the second test, Virender Sehwag and Harbhajan Singh have made rapid strides in the latest ICC player rankings. Opener Virender Sehwag, who cracked an unbeaten double century in the first innings and followed it up with a blazing fifty at Galle, moved 10 places to No. 11. Such a performance was much anticipated from Sehwag and Viru did meet the expectations!

There is another star of the test series- Bhajji! After being in news for so many wrong reasons, Bhajji has again made the headlines, this time of course for the good reasons! Harbhajan Singh bagged 10 wickets in the second test. This performance moved him to the 11th position in ICC rankings, after climbing seven places. Harbhajan Singh is led by his captain Anil Kumble in the rankings, who remains on No. 9, while Zaheer Khan is in the 18th position.

Sehwag’s opening partner Gautam Gambhir is also out to move the ICC rankings. He jumped a whopping 28 spots to be in 49th position that too in great fashion! For Sri Lankans much is not good to hear! Sri Lankan vice-captain Kumar Sangakkara, who started the Test series ranked the No. 1 Test batsman, however, slipped to No. 2 after the first Test. But after another average display at Galle, he slid three spots further to fifth. Shivnarine Chanderpaul of the West Indies leads the batting charts.

The bad news for India is that the fabulous four of Indian middle order - Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Saurav Ganguly and V.V.S. Laxman - did not play an exceptional part in the series. So this dismal performance by these main players have arisen many questions like whether they are approaching the end of the road?

Since upcoming test match is there, so there is no reason to panic yet. This will be perhaps the final test opportunity for these four players to prove their worth. Especially for Sachin this will be the chance to surpass the record of Lara.
The one who’s failed in all four innings so far is, of course, Ganguly, 36. Normally he is considered one of the most skillful in the face of spinners but his lack of runs is a little worrying.

Along with these four players the final test is also test of Kumble himself. His skills in bowling and leading the team will be under a tough scanner. So all of us who follow the game enthusiastically, have to wait and watch - what these tired shoulders can do in third test match. On the other hand the younger players who have jumbled the ICC rankings, they have surely much to gain from the final test match.

India levels Test series against Sri Lanka!

August 04, 2008 By: Rohini Verma Category: Reviews and Previews No Comments →

GALLE, Sri Lanka — In a dramatic fashion, India made a come back in the test series against Sri Lanka on Sunday. There was a tremendous effort by Off spinner Harbhajan Singh. He bagged a 10-wicket match haul as India claimed the last five Sri Lankan wickets for just six runs. This swift action provided India the much needed win in the second Test. So now the Test series is leveled and a lot of action is expected in the third and final test match.

After a humiliating innings defeat in the series opener, India salvaged its reputation with a strong performance with the ball. This great performance will now take India to Friday’s deciding Test in Colombo. Chasing a target of 307 runs to win in the second innings, Sri Lanka lost their way early, losing four top-order wickets for mere 37 runs on the fourth day.

On the Indian side opener Virender Sehwag hammered an unbeaten 201 and followed it up with a 50 in the second innings. So he was rightly named the man of the match. “We have done that in the past,” India’s captain Anil Kumble said of his team’s fightback. Once again the team has proved that they have the sufficient stamina to come back in an amazing way.

A 76-run partnership between Thilan Samaraweera and Tillakaratne Dilshan looked to resurrect the innings as they went for tea at 109-4, but Singh struck soon after tea when he had Dilshan (38) lbw, triggering a collapse by the tail. Thilan Samaraweera’s unbeaten 67 was the only highlight for the Lankans. Samaraweera faced 126 balls and hit eight boundaries but his performance was not sufficient for Lankans to win. Overall the home team looked clueless in front of the aggressive Indian bowling.

India, which had a 37-run lead on first innings, was bowled out for 269 in its second innings in Sunday’s opening session, giving Sri Lanka an achievable chase. However India immediately savaged the top order, quickly reducing Sri Lanka to 10-3.

Ishant Sharma was flawless in sending the opener Malinda Warnapura for a duck, with the score on 4. Then Zaheer Khan nailed the dangerous Kumar Sangakkara (1) in the next over. Both the catches were taken by Laxman. Captain Mahela Jayawardene was out at just 5 runs when Rahul Dravid took the catch at cover-point. Resuming after lunch at 24-3, Sri Lanka soon lost an out-of-form Michael Vandort at 10, trapped lbw by Singh.

So it was a disappointing test match for the Lankans but the only consolation for them is that they had won the first test, so even now the game may turn in their favor in the final test. On the Indian side Harbhajan Singh and Ishant Sharma bowled India to a series-levelling 170-run victory. Both the players will need to maintain their performance in the final test as well. Off-spinner Harbhajan claimed four for 51 from 14 overs while Sharma took three for 20 from 15 overs. Harbhajan’s haul gave him match figures of 10 for 153, the fifth 10-wicket haul of his career.

With their mental strength and quality to bounce back, India has come back in the series. With this tremendous effort the series is now alive. It will be a very exciting and interesting treat to all the fans to watch two excellent teams fighting in the final match. To win the final match Indian team will have to come up with a similar performance with bat and ball both. Only then they will be able to tame the Roaring Lankan tigers!

India vs. Sri Lanka – Second Test Match Preview

July 31, 2008 By: Rohini Verma Category: Reviews and Previews No Comments →

After a big debacle in the first test match against the Lankan tigers, Indian team is meeting the strong opponents again today. In the first test match India suffered its heaviest innings defeat in 34 years. So Indians will be battling the huge pressure on their shoulders.

The second test is coming as the real test of nerves for the Indian side. Now is the time to defeat the Lankan side to win the test series. To win the series, all the weapons will have to be used in this battle. This victory is also badly needed to curb the shrilling voices of criticism, coming from all the directions! This match is giving the right opportunity to launch a backlash but it is going to be a long and hard climb ahead.

Definitely there is a lot of resilience and experience in Indian team which may prove helpful for the team. No shuffling of personnel is expected and Kumble will be banking on his batsmen to play a big role in the expected revival. For the Indian side the toughest challenge is to restrict the deadly new spin sensation Ajantha Mendis.

On the other hand even the Lankans know that the Indian team can not be taken for granted. The Lankan skipper, Mahela Jayawardene told the media, “We know how good they are. I’m sure they are very disappointed after the first Test. They will come back strongly”.

But Galle is a happy hunting ground for the hosts so the Indians will need to push hard. The past records tell us that Sri Lanka has lost just one of the last nine games played here. Moreover there are some other dangerous figures as well - Muttiah Muralitharan has picked up 91 wickets in 12 games; and Mahela Jayawardene enjoys a devastating average of 99 here. These figures are quite intimidating so Indian team needs to come with best possible strategies and skills.

For India, to nurse the ambitions of winning the three-match series, there is a desperate need of perfect coordination between the batsmen and the bowling side. Its new-ball bowlers will find greater assistance here than they did in the first Test.

Much burden is there on the shoulders of Indian spinners - Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh. They need to get the early wickets of those batsmen who play Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis every other day in the nets. So there is a bountiful of challenge in front of the batting and bowling sides. In the last test Kumble was particularly unlucky to have Jayawardene dropped twice and finished wicketless. So there is also greater need of discipline in fielding as well.

In this match the result of the toss does not appear to matter as the four matches have been won by the side batting first, four by the side bowling first here. On the Lankan side Muralitharan needs nine for 100 wickets at this venue, so it remains to be seen whether he succeeds in achieving this figure or not. On Indian side here is a chance for Rahul Dravid to become India’s second-highest run-getter and Sachin Tendulkar needs 133 to pass Brian Lara’s record run aggregate. So a lot of action will be there on the field and Indian team will hope to achieve the best in this test.

The sides:
Sri Lanka: Mahela Jayawardene (capt.), Michael Vandort, Malinda Warnapura, Kumar Sangakkara, Thilan Samaraweera, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Prasanna Jayawardene (wk), Chaminda Vaas, Muttiah Muralitharan, Nuwan Kulasekara, Ajantha Mendis, Thilan Thushara, Chamara Kapugedera, Chamara Silva and Dammika Prasad.

India: Anil Kumble (capt.), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, V.V.S. Laxman, Rohit Sharma, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Harbhajan Singh, Ishant Sharma, Zaheer Khan, R.P. Singh, Munaf Patel, Pragyan Ojha and Parthiv Patel.
Umpires: Billy Doctrove and Rudi Koertzen.
Third umpire: Mark Benson.
Match referee: Alan Hurst.
