Cricket in India

The British were first to bring Cricket in India in the early 1700s, with the first cricket match being played in 1721. In 1848, the Parsi community in Mumbai formed the Oriental Cricket Club, the first cricket club to be established by Indians. There are references of Cricket in India have been played in the early parts of the 18th century. By the beginning of the 19th century the game was being played in the cities of Bombay, Calcutta and Madras. The presidency matches began in 1892-93 between Parsis and Europeans and the tournament became the Bombay Triangular. With the efforts of Princes, H E Grant-Gloven and A S de Mellow, the national championship, the Ranji Trophy began in 1935.

India played its first official Test against England in 1932. India achieved its first 'Cup' victory in international cricket in 1983 when it won the Prudential World cup beating West Indies by 43 runs at Lord's under the captaincy of Kapil Dev. Since then India has gained a significance ranking among top teams of Cricket in the World.

The Duleep Trophy competition was started by the Board of Control for Cricket in India in 1961-62 with the objective of providing a greater competitive edge in domestic cricket. During th 80's the legendary cricketers like Kapil Dev, Mohammed Azharuddin, Dilip Vengsarkar and all-rounder Ravi Shastri. Sachin Tendulkar and Anil Kumble made their contribution to the Cricket in India during the 1989 and 1990 which further improved the team.

The following year, Javagal Srinath, India's fastest bowler and Amar Singh made his debut in Indian cricket team. The team underwent a change as Rahul Dravid, Saurav Ganguly, later to be become captains of the team. Since 2000, the Cricket in India has undergone major improvements with the appointment of John Wright as India's first ever foreign coach. Recently Cricket in India achieved a historical victory at the twenty-twenty world cup under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. It was significant moment for Indians across the globe who feel so closely About Cricket .
