Chandrasekhar

Bhagwat Subramanya Chandrasekhar or ‘Chandra’ as he is often known is a former Indian cricketer who specialized in leg spin. Born on 17th May, 1945 in Mysore, Bhagwat Subramanya Chandrasekhar is considered amongst the top echelon of leg-spinners of all time. Chandrasekhar along with Bishen Singh Bedi, E.A.S. Prasanna and Srinivasaraghavan Venkataraghavan constituted the Indian spin quartet that dominated spin bowling in the 1960s and 1970s.

One of the major Cricketing Legends of all time, Chandrasekhar was infatuated with cricket from a very early age. He overcame a polio attack which withered his right wrist as a child, so that he always used his left arm for throwing, Chandrasekhar became one of the most successful leg spin bowlers in cricket history. He played in a total of 58 Test matches, and collected 242 wickets in his cricketing career. Bhagwat Subramanya Chandrasekhar considered Englishman Ken Barrington as the hardest batsman to bowl to.

Though Bhagwat Subramanya Chandrasekhar made his Test debut against England at Mumbai in the year 1964, his most memorable and outstanding performance was against England at The Oval on 23rd August, 1971 where he took six wickets for 38 runs, and helped India to win the series. Chandrasekhar was named as a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1972. Chandrasekhar had minimal batting skills, finishing with an average of 4 and he had the highest percentage of ducks in Test history. Chandrasekhar was given a special Gray-Nicholls bat during the 1977-78 Australian tour with a hole in it to commemorate the four ducks he scored and he had 23 ducks to his credit.
