Marylebone Cricket Club

Presumably founded in 1787, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) is one of the Popular Cricket Clubs in the world. It is a private members' club housed at the historic Lord's Cricket Ground near St. John's Wood in London, UK. Prior to the inception of the International Cricket Council (ICC), the MCC officially spearheaded the governance of International Cricket matches. Till date the Marylebone Cricket Club has the copyright claim of the laws of Cricket, commonly known as the MCC Coaching Manual.

According to some schools of thought, the Marylebone Cricket Club was reconstructed in 1787. This coveted Cricket club has been referred to names like The Cricket Club or The Noblemen's and Gentlemen's Club. During the early years it was more of a social and gambling club for the elite class.

From the beginning of the 20th century, the MCC hosted many test matches between England and other touring teams like Australia and South Africa. Until the 1976/77 tour to Australia, whenever the English Cricket team toured overseas, they were called the MCC XI.

Despite the fact that the copyright of the laws of Cricket belongs to the Marylebone Cricket Club, recent developments has signaled that ICC no longer interested to remain under the aegis of this traditional Cricket club. In fact ICC has changed many of the laws pertaining to ODIs without consulting with the MCC. They have also made an explicit statement of autonomy by shifting their headquarter from London to Dubai.

The Marylebone Cricket Club grants special privileges to its discerning members. Each of the 18000 lifetime members and 4000 associate members enjoy the rights to use the pavilion and other stands at Lord's. The election procedure of members is also unique. One needs to secure votes of a minimum of three existing members in order to get listed under the waiting list of candidates.
