Eden Gardens

Eden Gardens is in eastern India in India's major metro Kolkata. Kolkata's old name was Calutta. The Eden Gardens are India's oldest cricket grounds in India having been established in 1863. While there are many other popular cricket grounds too, Eden Gardens are one of the world's very best grounds. The cricket ground is also lovingly referred to as Asia's Lords grounds. Not unlike the Melbourne Cricket Ground – the MCG, the stadium is one of the largest stadiums in the world.

The first ever first-class match at Eden Garden was in 1917 and 1918. When MCC's and Douglas Jardine's team visited India in January 1934, the first test was held. Todate, Eden Gardens Kolkata has played host to thirty four exciting matches. Eden Gardens Calcutta holds the record for maximum number test matches played on a single ground. The very first ODI match (one day international match) at Eden Gardens was played in the February of 1987 against arch rivals Pakistan.

In preparation for World Cup 1987, the stadium at Eden Gardens was modernized with covered stands, pavilion and a contemporary Club house. The club house contains the offices of CAB – the state body for cricketing (Cricket Association of Bengal). Four massive floodlights were put up at the Eden Garden stadium and in November 1993, five countries fought it out in day and night one day internationals to celebrate the CAB Diamond Jubilee. The Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) celebrated its platinum jubilee in November 2004 with an ODI against Pakistan. The pitch at Eden Gardens is a slow track, good for batting and spinners get early assistance. The stadium can host 1,20,000 guests. Watching a match at Eden Gardens is a treat for all those who want to know more about cricket.
