Eden Park

Eden Park is the most important Auckland cricket sports ground. The ground is used for the rugby union in winter, and for playing cricket in summer. Cricket lovers need not worry...the pitch can be removed. Eden Park is situated three kilometers to the southwest of Auckland's Central Business District. The Eden Park is between Mt. Eden suburbs and Kingsland. Since 1910, the ground hosts Auckland cricket and now it also hosts ODIs (one day internationals) and test matches. With a stadium capacity of 42,000 for cricket, and it lesser due to the bigger area needed in cricket and the sightscreens. Eden Park is the largest sports stadium in New Zealand.

This capacity is expected to go up soon to about 60,000 as New Zealand will be holding the Rugby World Cup in 2011. After a lot of political debate and some acrimony, it was decided to develop the Eden Park. Thwe opening ceremony, the starting pool game, the finals and many other games will be held at The Eden Park.

In redevelopment of Eden Park, fresh three tiered south stand will take over from old South and South West stands with capacity 24,000 and also fresh three tiered east stand will replace terraces. Covered seats are expected to increase from 23,000 to 38,000. The redeveloped Eden Park is planned to have concourse for people to move round grounds and stadium with food / beverage, toilets and even corporate areas on the cards. Public transport upgrading is also on the anvil including transport hub with pedestrian bridge from stadium to Kingsland and bus drop off zone. Other development measures are also planned.

Eden Park has done a lot to further the cause of Auckland cricket and New Zealand cricket. With the redevelopment, these will receive an additional fillip. While there are other popular cricket grounds, the Eden Park has a charm which is its very own and while it is not all about cricket, it certainly does more then its fair share about cricket.
