The Gabba

Brisbane Cricket Ground, situated in Woolloongabba suburb is a big sports stadium in Brisbane, capital of Queensland. It is therefore colloquially called the Gabba. The first cricket match at the Gabba was held on 19th December of 1896 between Parliament and The Press. The Gabba was not used for inter state or international cricket until 1931. The first Sheffield Shield match was washed out. The first test match at the Gabba was between Australia and South Africa in November - December 1931.

Since then, apart from Brisbane Cricket, Queensland cricket and Australian cricket, the Gabba has also played host to athletics, Australian rules football, baseball, concerts, cricket, cycling, rugby league, rugby union, soccer and pony and greyhound races.

From 1993 to 2005 The Gabba has been redeveloped at a cost of $ 128 millions The dimensions of playing area are now 170.6 meters by 149.9 meters. The seating capacity is 42,000. The other highlights are:
  • The Gabba was the first Australian venue to host an International Twenty20 cricket match.
  • Sir Donald Bradman has record score of highest individual test innings of 226 against South Africa in 1931.

  • The ground with the first ever tied test match between Frank Worrell's West Indian side and Richie Benaud's Australian team in December of 1960.
  • Brett Lee is the only cricket player to have hit a six out of the (redeveloped) ground on 15th November 2005.
While there are grounds and grounds galore, few grounds have the charming and after development formidable appearance of the Gabba.
