Melbourne Cricket Ground

The MCG - Melbourne Cricket Ground is an Australian sports stadium located in Yarra Park in Melbourne the home of Melbourne Cricket Club. The world record for the highest light towers at any sporting place anywhere is held by the stadium. The MCG is close to the city center and can be reached by Jolimont and Richmond train stations. While Melbourne Cricket Ground was the center piece of the Summer Olympics 1956 and Commonwealth games 2006, it is also one of the best popular cricket grounds in the world.

The stadium is one of the main stadiums of Australian cricket where test matches as well as one day internationals are played. The capacity of the stadium is just under 1,00,000.

The first cricket match was played in September of 1854. The first interstate match was played in 1856. On Boxing Day 1866 an Indigenous Australian cricket team played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground with 11,000 spectators against an MCC team. That team went on to tour England in 1868 and played at the ground three more times before 1869. The stadium grew from strength to strength with addition of a telephone in 1881. The first cricket match regarded as a Test was played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground by Australia and England in March 1877 and was won by Australia by 45 runs.

In 1882, England lost at home to Australia and the Ashes were born. On their very next journey to Australia, it was at Melbourne Cricket Ground, that Ivo Bligh and his men were “returned the ashes” after their triumph over Australian cricket. The first one day international match was played between Australia and England in 1971. In 1981, the notorious “ underarm” bowling also took place between triumphant Australia and a disgusted New Zealand. Lest some forget it was also at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 1992, that Pakistan won their first ever World Cup.

The Melbourne Cricket Ground is all about cricket and the triumph of winning. In a way, Melbourne Cricket Ground has always symbolized the healthy growth of cricket's growing influence.
